Biotech Start Up
Challenge
A San Diego oncology-focused biotech start-up company with limited resources needed to implement an operational infrastructure to begin development efforts within major timeline constraints. With single individuals representing each function of drug development, it was imperative that global oversight, management and communication be as simple as possible minimizing the administrative burden on already over allocated personnel. With rapid growth expected, the management structure needed to be able to evolve and scale up with minimal impact or delay on the biotech
organization.
Solution
Start-up organizations are often presented with similar challenges given the large volume of work and limited resources they begin with. Often, not much emphasis is placed on operational strategy and infrastructure, and repercussions are felt as the company begins to grow. By implementing PMP Strategy Consulting’s Biotech Start up Suite, the biotech was able to more efficiently manage all efforts and communication from a single scalable solution within no time. Having an effective management infrastructure saved the organization administrative costs, unexpected delays and expedited their efforts towards drug approval.
Project Management
Challenge
A clinical diagnostic laboratory lacked a project management office (PMO) and structured project management practices across the organization. As a result, projects were delayed and experiencing issues that were not easily visible to management. In addition, many different outdated spreadsheets were utilized to communicate information ineffectively without allowing stakeholders to see the big picture or capture the real time status of the organization. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) had to be manually calculated on a monthly basis to report to management consuming a large percentage of the project managers role vs. allowing them to focus on issues or ensuring the success of their projects. In addition, when projects were closed, lessons learned were not assessed or recorded to ensure future projects did not experience similar issues.
Solution
To address the many challenges experienced in the absence of a structured project management model, PMP Strategy Consulting implemented appropriate PMP practices in conjunction with a cloud centralized project management system within the organization to create uniformity and an automated communication network. By providing a framework for efficient project management, less chaos and fewer obstacles to success were experienced by the teams and organization as a whole. Lessons learned were banked in a searchable repository and communicated appropriately to enable quick action and implementations to ensure process improvements and promote a culture of excellence.
Contract & Budget Management
Challenge
A global fortune 500 pharmaceutical company utilized a contract management system that did not allow for the hierarchical management of contracts which is required to properly manage vendors, projects and budgets. As a result, the organization was not able to provide vendor budget oversight that was needed to effectively manage workloads across multiple countries and offices to support the development of many drug candidates. As a result, delays were experienced in clinical trials and critical projects that could have been avoided. Most importantly, without proper oversight of vendor budgets and overall spending, cost savings and spending oversight were compromised and resulted in increased costs and overhead.
Solution
To address this challenge, PMP Strategy Consulting migrated the pharmaceutical organization from their current contract management system to a hierarchical relational database for contract and budget management. By enabling all personnel to execute their job functions while automatically reporting budget, vendor and workload management metrics, improved insight and corporate oversight was achieved. As a result, increased workload capacity and decreased administrative burden allowed for a more collaborative and positive work environment. Data mining across vendors and service types resulted in improved vendor management, contract negotiations and massive corporate savings.
